Kasha-Katuwe National Monument is also known as Tent Rocks. The unusual rock formations are the result of volcanic activity millions of years ago. Volcanic rocks atop solidified volcanic ash deposits present some uncanny balancing acts. The conical shapes of the formations are known locally as “hoodoos.” As erosion continues, there will be a time in the future when the balanced rocks will no longer sit atop the hoodoos.
