40 or 50 miles north of Albuquerque, NM is an interesting geographic area and a very nice winery. This is the Jemez Pueblo tribal land and the village of Ponderosa, NM.The Native American language spoken in the pueblo is Towa (sometimes displayed as Tewa). Walatowa is the native word for something like “this is the place where the Towa people live.” The sandstone rock formations here are saturated with red clay, and the drive coming into the Walatowa visitor center from the south is impressive. The Ponderosa Winery is part of the New Mexico Wine Growers Association and they have both local and regional wines available by sharing and trading grapes from other wineries across the state.
